Really good food and portions. My only complaint is the upcharge for substitutes. Switching out pork to vegetables for the rice and egg roll ended up costing $4 extra. The area was clean and there was decent parking outside.
Overview
If you’ve ever driven down Williston Road around dinnertime, you’ve probably noticed the steady stream of locals heading into Hong Kong Kitchen South Burlington at 1900 Williston Rd, South Burlington, VT 05403. I first stopped in on a freezing Vermont evening after a long workday, craving something warm and comforting. Since then, it’s become one of those dependable spots I recommend whenever someone asks where to grab solid Chinese takeout or a casual sit-down meal in the area.
The menu is extensive without being overwhelming. You’ll find the classics-General Tso’s chicken, beef with broccoli, shrimp lo mein, pork fried rice-alongside lighter options like steamed mixed vegetables and tofu dishes. What stood out to me during my visits is consistency. Whether dining in or ordering takeout, the flavors remain balanced, the sauces aren’t overly sweet, and the portions are generous enough for leftovers the next day.
Food safety and quality matter, especially in a busy kitchen. According to the USDA, maintaining proper food temperature and storage is essential to prevent foodborne illness. While most diners don’t see what happens behind the scenes, I’ve noticed that orders here come out hot, fresh, and well-packaged for transport. That attention to detail builds trust. In my experience, even during peak hours, the staff keeps things moving efficiently without sacrificing quality.
One evening, I brought a group of colleagues after a conference at the University of Vermont. We ordered family-style to sample more of the menu-sesame chicken, vegetable spring rolls, egg drop soup, and house special fried rice. Sharing plates is often the best way to evaluate a restaurant, and in this case, it paid off. The spring rolls were crisp without being greasy, and the soup had that silky texture that shows careful preparation rather than rushed cooking. My colleagues, including one who grew up in New York’s Chinatown, commented that the flavors felt authentic yet approachable.
From a nutritional standpoint, Chinese cuisine can be both indulgent and balanced, depending on your choices. The Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health often highlights the benefits of vegetable-forward meals and lean proteins. Here, dishes like steamed chicken with broccoli or shrimp with mixed vegetables make it easy to enjoy a satisfying meal without going overboard. At the same time, if you’re in the mood for something comforting like sweet and sour chicken, the kitchen delivers that nostalgic flavor many of us grew up with.
Customer reviews around South Burlington frequently mention the quick service and friendly staff. During one particularly busy Friday night, I watched the front counter team handle a long line of takeout orders with calm professionalism. Mistakes can happen anywhere, but when I once received the wrong side dish, the issue was corrected immediately with an apology and a fresh replacement. That responsiveness speaks volumes about how the restaurant values its guests.
Location is another advantage. Being situated on Williston Road means easy access, plenty of parking, and proximity to shopping centers and local businesses. For families running errands or professionals heading home from work, it’s a convenient stop. Over time, it has become one of those reliable neighborhood spots that people return to not because it’s flashy, but because it consistently satisfies.
While it may not carry national awards from organizations like the James Beard Foundation, it fills an important role in the local dining scene. Every community benefits from dependable restaurants that offer good value, familiar flavors, and a welcoming atmosphere. Based on repeated visits and conversations with other diners, Hong Kong Kitchen in South Burlington continues to meet those expectations.
Menus evolve, and availability can shift depending on supply and season, so it’s always wise to check directly if you’re looking for a specific dish. Still, whether you’re craving lo mein, fried rice, or a comforting bowl of soup on a cold Vermont night, this spot on 1900 Williston Rd remains a steady choice in the South Burlington restaurant lineup.

First time ordering from this restaurant. Was not disappointed! We ordered at the counter and in about 20’ the food was ready. We tried a few other Chinese restaurants in the Burlington area but this one is really “hands down” Their white rice is really “jasmine”! Food is well prepared, generous portions and decent prices. We’ll certainly be back!
Hong Kong kitchen is a small restaurant, it is good for take out but there are a couple small tables if you like to eat there. The food was some of the best. If your in the area I highly recommend stopping by.
Best Chinese food I ever had. This is now my favorite place. Portions are extremely good.
Best Chinese in the area. Quick takeout, good quality. Couple of tables and chairs for eating in but really designed for take out
Great family run restaurant. Best Chinese food around. Only wish they were open Mondays.
Perfect for take out Chinese. The food was hot, fresh and flavorful. Crab Rangoon were stuffed with cream cheese, beef and broccoli was great, Hunan chicken too. The mapo tofu was awesome.
